We have had on several occasions already fire in the parlor + offices grates, either in the evening or on dull rainy days, at the same time the people in the east (at home) are suffering from most intense heat. Port Arthur would be a good field for Henry Beigh to expand some of his [humane] efforts. The drivers have a habit of unnecessarily healing their horses, and making them gallop. The prospects of the mining industry in this neighborhood seem to be very good at present, and this is mostly attributed to the fact that American capitalists have come in, for the evidence of valuable mineral deposits has long been known. Before dinner Max Marie + I took a stroll to McVicker’s Creek. I got another good night’s observations.
