About

AnthroHarvest is an ongoing endeavour to showcase the many cultures and vibrancy of Ottawa, Ontario.  This site also showcases the ethnographic skills of anthropology students who are using their communities as anthropological sites for investigation.

The uOttawa Time Capsule is an archaeological "dig" in reverse.  Students from the Museums, Representations and Power (Ant 2131) class had to choose objects that they thought best described the University in fall 2025.

The Latin American Stories add ethnographic content about Latin immigrants to Ottawa, Ontario. Students from the winter 2025 class, Latin America and the Caribbean (ANT 3340), interviewed members of the Latin Festival Ottawa-Gatineau and members of their own families who also identified as Latino.

Our Story

The idea for AnthroHarvest began in the fall of 2024 at the University of Ottawa.  Dr. Laurie Weinstein, an anthropologist in the Faculty of Social Sciences, wanted to create a website for her courses where students could participate in a variety of projects, from showcasing the cultural diversity of Ottawa to illustrating the historical and archaeological richness of Ottawa and Gatineau. As a professor who is new to Canada, she was struck by Ottawa-Gatineau’s diversity.  She realized the city could serve as an anthropological platform for understanding cross-cultural communities.

Indigenous Affirmation

We pay respect to the Algonquin people, who are the traditional guardians of this land. We acknowledge their longstanding relationship with this territory, which remains unceded. We pay respect to all Indigenous people in this region, from all nations across Canada, who call Ottawa home. We acknowledge the traditional knowledge keepers, both young and old. And we honour their courageous leaders: past, present, and future. Indigenous Affirmations, uOttawa
