What can you chant and sing?
Whenever people are gathered together to march for a common goal or at times of protest, it is common to sing or use chants to communicate a message. It literally creates a louder and stronger voice as people sing and chant together. The lyrics featured in the first picture here are an example of a song that was printed out for people to sing together at an IWD march in Edmonton, Alberta in 1986. It even gives the instruction to sing it to the tune of "Fire's Burning".
At the beginning of the 1980s a group of women came together to form the Red Berets. They carried out their first performance under this name at the International Women's Day rally in Toronto in 1981. This socialist group of women performed throughout the 1980s at several feminist events. Performing songs and adapting slogans from these songs to suit particular causes they also performed their own original songs.
