This is a typical example of the decoration of binding using the technique of gilding. While generally ornamental decorations were applied by means of gilding irons and rolls onto the spine, here we have a something of a portrait, a personification of the city of Leiden rendered in gold, on parchment.

Il s’agit d’un exemple typique de décoration de reliure utilisant la technique de la dorure. On a l’habitude des dessins à la roulette au pourtour et sur le dos du livre, mais ici la décoration propose plutôt un portrait. La dorure est réalisée sur parchemin.
