The Use of Artificial Intelligence in Creative Writing and Fanfiction

UO-ISI-FanFiction-Podcast-Banner.jpg

With the rise of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language generation, what impact will these tools have on creative writing communities, especially those functioning and thriving on volunteer fan labour? Listen along for an exploration of the recent literature on the topic using a Data Feminism lens, including discussion about emerging issues, a critique of how the technology is currently being (mis)used, as well as the merits of these tools and how they might benefit these communities in future.

This short podcast episode was created for Dr. Jada Watson's special topics course ISI 6300 Big Data, Culture, and Society.

LEIGH INGRAM is a third year Master of Information Studies student at the University of Ottawa, with a Bachelor of Architectural Studies and a Minor in English Language and Literature from Carleton University. She is currently working in the project management field, with goals of transitioning into data and information management upon completion of her degree. In her free time, Leigh can often be found reading and writing, though she also enjoys games of all types, cooking, and camping. She is currently researching information seeking behaviours in the fanfiction community as the topic of her master's thesis.
