Talking the Talk but Not Walking the Walk: Exploring the Influence of Veganism and Legal Proceedings on Linguistic Practices in English (research poster)

Description

Is the plant-based food movement changing our language? This study used the News On the Web corpus to investigate whether legislation to replace terms such as ‘soy milk’ or ‘veggie burger’ with ‘plant-based beverage’ or ‘veggie disc’ is effective. Spoiler alert: it’s not! People still rave about ‘vegan cheese’ rather than ‘soya slices’.
