Title

More than Meets the Eye: Using Machine Translation to Evaluate Language Policy Compliance (research poster)

Description

There’s more to machine translation than meets the eye! The CRTC mandates the use of plain language in communications between mobile service providers and customers. This study repurposes a machine translation system as a plain language checker to investigate the language quality of the documentation provided by the “big 3” (Bell, Rogers, TELUS). So how are they doing? There’s room for improvement across the board, but machine translation appears to be an effective tool for highlighting problem areas in the texts.
