Description
Rossetti poem(s): "Goblin Market"
Notes about the text: Klein’s program notes indicate that “The work itself is not intended as a programmatic representation of the poem, but is rather a structural and psychological study of the actions and characters portrayed therein; as such, it exists as a parallel or alternate realization of the original, almost as a shadow or specter.” Klein’s interpretation probes the psychology of the poem, and while it makes minimal use of text from Rossetti's poem, Klein's composition is closely modeled on the poem formally and structurally as well as psychologically.
Composition history: Supported by a Composer Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Performance instructions: Klein’s Goblin Market for solo trombonist and environment is to be performed by “trombonist with prepared piano and intermedia environment.” The intermedia environment includes amplification, live FX processing, computer music, lighting, and staging. Front matter in the musical score also includes a diagram indicating the placement of various elements on the stage.
