Description
Rossetti poem(s): "Remember"
Composition history: "This setting is part of a Symphony of Songs I composed, my Symphony No. 1. The Symphony is a setting of poetry from the books, Songs that Make Grown Men Cry and Songs That Make Grown Women Cry. I was very aware of the poem, having previously recorded the text alone on a collection of poetry I produced for CD called Poetic License. When I saw the poem in the collection I knew I would set it. There are some dissonant, complex songs in the Symphony and I felt the audience needed a 'break.' So I set this as a simple folk tune!" (Roven) "My Friend and colleague James Taylor, a vocal teacher at Virginia Common University, asked me if I had any compositions for the excellent a cappella women's choir at his university. In the score for women's SSAA chorus, Roven, comments on this version's origins: "I had recently finished my 'Symphony of Songs,' [...] Given the scope (and expense) of performing such a massive work, I was only too happy to start slowly and offer these these [sic.] excerpts for starters."
Tempo markings: "Andante ma cantabile"; quarter note = 98 [tenor solo]; "Andantino ma rubato è cantabile"; quarter note = 98 [SSAA]
Recordings: A rearranged version was recorded as a baritone trio by Tobias Greenhalgh, Steven Labrie, and Jarrett Ott on CD album titled "Remember" (Roven Records, 2018). YouTube, uploaded by Tobias Greenhalgh, 16 Aug. 2018, https://youtu.be/X7MaXEz0OI8.
Notes: The version for Women's SSAA chorus was published in a collection called "Four Songs for Women's Choir (SSAA, unaccompanied)" by composer Glen Roven, published by Tintagel Music in 2017.
