Rossetti poem(s): "Remember"
Work contains texts by multiple authors
Notes about the text: Also includes the text of part one of Robert Louis Stevenson's "Northwest Passage" and the final stanza of Richard Lovelace's "To Althea, from Prison."
Composition history: A note by the composer is included on page two of the score states: "In Memoriam by Anne Frank was written to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Anne Frank's death in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp just six weeks before the Nazi surrender in 1945. It was commissioned by The Voices Foundation, whose cause is the promotion of singing amongst school children - a cause very close to my heart - so an association with one of European history's most famous young women seemed to me apt. The overwhelming message of Anne Frank's inspirational diary is one of optimism and love. I therefore felt that although the circumstances of her life and death strike the modern reader as unbearably sad, the piece should above all, like Anne herself, exude warmth and gentleness."
Tempo markings: "Very slowly and gently"; quarter note = c.52
Performance history: A note on the score states that "The first performance was given by 'Voices' conducted by Susan Digby, at St John Smith's Square, London, on 14 February 1994."
Dedication: "for Lucy Russell Hills"
