Composition history: The song was composed in 1903, employing music that Ives originally composed in 1892 (Gooch and Thatcher 4622).

Performance history: The setting is used by Polly Pen in the successful off-broadway stage production of Goblin Market, which debuted at the Vineyard Theatre, New York in 1985. On 13 April 1986 the production moved to Circle in the Square, New York. The song was also performed on 13 October 1987 in a concert at Heeren Recital Hall, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 1987 (recorded on cassette).
