Notes: This song is one of fourteen settings of poems by Christina Rossetti found in Eleanor Smith's Modern Music Series, first volume "A Primer of Vocal Music" (1901). It is found in a section called "Animals." The following statement is found prominently on the title page of the book: "Wherein the study of musical structure is pursued through the consideration of complete melodic forms and practice based on exercises related to them" (1898-1901). The song was then published in the collection "The Music Hour in the Kindergarten and First Grade" (1929) by Osbourne McConathy, Formerly Director of the Department of Public School Music, Northwestern University; W. Otto Miessner, Director of Public School Music, Chicago Musical College; Edward Bailey Birge, Professor of Public School Music, Indiana University; Mabel E. Bray, Director of the Department of Music, State Teachers College of Trenton, New Jersey. It is categorized for "The First Grade" in a section called "Rote Songs for Aural Observation." "Grateful acknowledgment is also due to Mrs. Emma Grant Meader of the State Normal School, New Haven, Connecticut, and Teachers College, Columbia University, for her selection and supervision of the choice of poetry; Mrs. Florence E. Dangerfield, Director of he Department of Physical Education, Bradford Academy, Haverhill, Massachusetts, for her assistance in correlating rhythmic activities with the vocal music lesson; [...] and especially the poets and composers who have graciously contributed to the book as an expression of their love for little children" ("Acknowledgments" p. vi).
