Notes about the text: In the setting, the fourth line of the second stanza in the poem (l. 9) is omitted. The first line of the poem is repeated at the end of the song.
Tempo markings: quarter note = 60
Performance instructions: On page 10 of the score, it stipulates, "CANON may be repeated as many times as desired and may be sung by soloists." For the last three bars, "in the absence of low C basses, all basses sing the top bass C."
