Notes about the text: Hearne changes the word "silence" in stanza 8 of Rossetti's poem to "darkness," and the word "hearken" in stanza 9 to "listen."

Notes: The 1910 score is a revised edition of an earlier version not seen, which the British Library catalog states was published in 1891. The earlier version belonged to a set of songs called "Bird Raptures: 3 Songs with pianoforte accompaniment" and was reviewed in the Monthly Musical Record (1 March 1892: 57) and the London Times (3 March 1893: 3) (Ives DM98).
