Performance instructions: "With rubato and expression." "Close harmonies with subtle chromatic movement are hummed by the choir beneath the line of the solo voice. Both groups combine to sing certain passages with more strength and passion thus creating a suitably dramatic piece. Each of the 3 verses is followed by a short wordless refrain giving an Olde English madrigal-type feel" ("One Foot on Sea and One on Shore – SATB Choir and soloist").

Performance history: "This was performed by the Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia at several ‘pop-up’ performances in the North East of England in July 2021" (Lander).
