The occupation of New Caledonia by American forces has given rise to the following newspaper comment:- the ... says " ... action has been imposed upon us by military necessity but it has also been a result of our policy. We wish to protect the integrity of the French empire wherever it is menaced. Our only aim is to maintain the independence of French territory everywhere".
