- 1930 – First appointed at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Victoria, BC. (Pearce, 140)

- 1942? – Active? Overhauled the now named Wray-Bryden telescope when it was first set up in Victoria. (“The Wray-Brydon Telescope”)

- 1943 – “Mr. S.S. Girling of Victoria, B.C., who for 15 years had constructed many instruments for the Observatory, was appointed Instrument Maker in March 1943.” (Pearce, 140)

- 1952 - Girling constructs “a new optical plate with a three-point suspension and compensating weights” for the universal spectrograph at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory. (Wright, 207)
