Using the Maker Map
The database map shows the locations of Canadian scientific or precision equipment makers from 1778 until 2000.
Flags on the map indicate known locations of makers in a given year. Clicking on a flag reveals the name of the maker, the address and the the year(s) for which the address is known. Flags indicate that there is evidence showing the maker to be present in that location for the year(s) given, but the presence beyond that date is unconfirmed.
Different symbols on the markers indicate the type of activity ongoing at the site, such as making/manufacturing (factory); research/innovation (atom); repairing (recycle sign); sales (shopping cart); administration (briefcase). Activities are privileged by dominant activity, with making, repairing and researching given precedence.
Different colours roughly indicate types of makers. These are intended as a guideline only. More information about makers shown can be accessed by searching the maker in the database.

Note: Significant changes have occurred to Canadian roads and municipalities over 250 years! This includes street renaming, street renumbering, and the construction of highway infrastructure and city blocks which have reshaped the landscape. Although research was undertaken using historic maps to try to identify historic addresses, in some cities this was not immediately possible, and locations should be taken to be approximate.
