- Late 1880s – Charles Potter founds the Map and School Supply Company: “educational maps, globes and other school requisites; philosophical and chemical apparatus and glassware; map mounting and colouring a specialty.” (Smith, 25)

- 1898 – Map & School Supply Company very large and successful. “By the late 1890s, his Map and School Supply Company was one of the largest educational, mathematical and navigation equipment firms in the city; indeed, in advertisements it boasted that it was the biggest in the entire country.” (Smith, 28)
