Jewel Box Revue: in song and sight a drag show

Subject

Description

This newspaper article covers a music and drag venue called the Blue Orchid. The Blue Orchid featured “female impersonators”, as well as musical performers. This article is covering a drag act called the Jewel Box Revue, an early occurrence of Drag in Canada. Drag performances and music performance have a strong intersection and are important to the music scene in Toronto. When discussing music of this time, it is also important to acknowledge the Queer spaces for Queer Musicians. This source is important, as it proves the existence of Queer spaces, communities, and nightlife during an era when it was dangerous to live as a queer person. The Blue Orchid shut down in 1976, and the current venue in its place is Lee’s Palace, which is also an integral part of Toronto’s music history.
