Description
The St. Antoine District emerged in the late 19th century as one of Montreal’s most important centres of Black life, shaped by both geography and opportunity. Its location near the rail yards and Canadian Pacific Railway depot drew many Black men seeking employment as sleeping-car porters who wanted to live close to their jobs. While their husbands were gone, Black women often found employment as domestic workers for affluent households nearby. As these families settled, the district grew into a concentrated and self-sustaining community marked by strong social networks, mutual support, and shared cultural practices. By the early decades of the 20th century, the neighbourhood had become a focal point for Black migration, out of the 1 million people living in Montreal, 5000 were Black people living in the St. Antoine district.
