"Must Overcome Race Prejudice" in The Dawn of Tomorrow
Description
Volume III, Number 44 of the Dawn of Tomorrow, a newspaper written for and by Black Canadians, published between 1923-1971. This particular issue is from September 1944. The Dawn of Tomorrow was a prominent source of information for Black folks, with political news, celebrations of achievements, and local updates. This issue demonstrates the connection between the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and other organizations. The article, Must Overcome Race Prejudice, documents the first observance of Race Relations Day in Toronto. The idea was thought of by reverend Dr. W. C. Perry. The article gives a brief explanation of the prejudice felt by Black people in North America, and that there must be better relations between races, particularly in places of worship. An address was given by V. I. Petgrave, the President of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. If members were active in one organization, they were likely activists in other respects, helping for the advancement of their people.
