This image contains two pie charts modelling the composition (from which regions they emigrate) of total Immigration amounts into Canada (the first being until 1980 and the second being the total in 1990) I created using data from Statistics Canada about relative Immigration rates into Canada from 1980 to 2021. For the purposes of this modelling, I included Egypt under the Africa Region and Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau under the China Region (this is not meant as a political statement, they are categorized based on how they would have likely been grouped in Canadian society). The first chart depicts a predominantly European Immigration total (over 60%), with a significant number of Chinese (4.6%) and Caribbean (7%) immigrants. This is then contrasted with a reduction in European immigration (under 50%) and an increase in Chinese (7.6%) and African (4.7%) immigration. This illustrates a growing trend of Chinese and African-Descended persons entering Canada, contributing to a rapidly growing diaspora after 1980. In the context of this period (1945-1990), this dramatic increase in immigration could be seen as a byproduct of loosening restrictions and greater ability to find residency in Canada, following changes like the 1982 Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This also signifies how these diasporas are now more composed of first-generation Canadians who, bringing traditions from the diasporas’ ancestral origin countries, affect how cultural and social aspects will develop.
