Description

The Canadian government recognized Jackie Washington’s talent and contributions to Canadian music culture and inducted him into the Canadian Jazz and Blues Hall of Fame in 2002. Washington was adamant to preserve his family's heritage and cultural history his whole life, starting to perform at the age of 5, including songs from his great grandfather who ran away from slavery using the underground railroads. His impressive collection of more than 1200 songs and was always known as a story teller when performing, retelling Black history to anyone who would listen, keeping it alive. (“Canadian bluesman Jackie Washington dies at 89,” CBC, 2009) Washington has always been a contributor to preserving Black Canadian culture, has constantly given back to communities and donated his paper collections to McMaster archives in order to preserve his heritage and show its importance.
