The Influence Of The Civil Rights And Black Power Movement In Canada

Description

This page from a journal article, falls into the very start of the Black Canadian Directing movement. The civil rights movement had an undeniable impact on Canada, and it enforced new motives of the Black identity. This is seen through the emergence of the Black pride and black power movement that started to emerge in the late sixties and eventually carried through onto the seventies and so on. This new voice that was brought to the Black folks of Canada was a sense of pride they finally expressed, but also a voice they wanted to be heard. This was eventually seen through art and more such as documentaries. The Black Canadian directors' works in the earliest stages were almost a direct response to this movement and what likely kickstarted Roger McTair and Claire Prieto to create Some Black Woman 1975. This was the starting factor of the emergence of Black narratives and voices in Canada through documentaries and film. It was the first domino of many to fall for many stories and voices to be shared from that point forward.
