Matti explains that because of his drag style, he cannot perform in a lot of typical gay bars, knowing that they prefer queens with a more traditional performance. Already having limited opportunities being a Black Canadian performer, his drag was pushed even further “underground” in the community. He also states during the interview that many Black performers struggled with the alienation from home, and struggled even more when they arrived in Toronto and were only seen as a sexual icon or an untouchable diva, when all they really wished for was to earn a living and have a normal, average life. Though, it was difficult to achieve as the average Black Canadian queer person was still alienated even in the queer community.
