This is an excerpt from an interview by the AIDS Activist History Project with Dionne A. Falconer, who was a leading figure in Black CAP (The Black Coalition for AIDS Prevention), talked about how it felt taking on such an active role in the organization at a young age. She recalls the challenge of pushing for education over a topic most communities did not want to even think about given the heavy stigma surrounding it. Nevertheless, Black CAP was a persistent force even if their efforts fell on deaf ears. Dionne’s and the organization's efforts in general represent how half the battle of activism is in perseverance and sometimes just offering a space where people who do want to have a discussion or information can seek refuge and safety. It is just as helpful to be a constant place of safety in people’s lives than to outwardly push out demonstrations.
