Interview with Dr. Constantin Katsakioris on the Patrice Lumumba University

Dr. Constantin Katsakioris is a professor at the University of Bayreuth in Germany. He is also the foremost scholar on Soviet educational policy in Africa. The following video is an interview with Dr. Katsakioris discussing some of the major debates in the scholarship. The main problem can be summed up by the conundrum he brings forward in the interview: having an institution exclusive for a socio-economic group outside their native country was bound to ellicit controversy. This was especially true, we argue, because of the era of self-determination sweeping across Africa as well as the ability of African nations and independence movements to compel the University to transform according to their needs. If you are to take anything away from this website, let it be that the agency of African students and states effected meaningful change throughout the Cold War period.
