Ida Lilian Kealy

Ida Lilian Kealy was born on June 6th, 1879, in Surrey, England. She was brought up the Church of England which might have exerted enormous influence on her and remained strong ties with her religious community. Thus, Ida who was unmarried, decided to focus on her career and dedicated her life to saving lives and providing extensive care and attention to the ill and afflicted. She had considerable training and education in her calling as a graduate nurse. At the age of 35, Ida enlisted in the war with the Canadian Medical Army Corps as a Nursing Sister through overseas. In her role, Ida had been stationed in several different hospitals attending to wounded and injured soldiers. In 1916, Ida had faced several health problems including the Influenza virus and symptoms of an inflamed mouth due to an undiagnosed condition at the time. Ida had been delivered treatment, but it did not help as it was later found to be Pneumonia which inevitably led to her death on March 12, 1918. For her significant contributions in the war, Ida was awarded the British Medal, Victory Medal and the 1914-1915 Star which is indicated in her medal card.
