We strike Lake Superior this morning + pass over heavy railway works skirting along deep bays studded with islands, cutting across peninsulas, crossing ravines over high trestles, though tunnels and rock cuts, in and out of woods give animation to the fleeting panorama. The last time I passed here nature was still sleep, the trees were devoid of foliage snow covered the ground in many places + ice still held [savor] on the lake so that the scene was rather dreary and not imbued with the life we see today. At 3-15 pm we were at Port Arthur + when I found my-self in my old quarters – The Northern – I fell forlorn – above all – Marie was not there – I walked onto the verandah where she was want to sit – but now all faces are strange. Dr + Mrs. Lehmen – acquaintances left by H Paul yesterday, Mr. + Mrs. [Zimmerman] have moved into their new house, only I am here. Had I gone [_________] I would not have felt this for there Marie has never been with me. To relieve myself [Simental] I called on Mrs. [Zimmerman] who was very glad to see me and expressed her sorrow that Marie had left for when she had gained such a strong attachment in the short time. She was pleased to receive from me one of my Rocky Mt. photographs as transparency. On the return called on Mr. P in his office. I took tea with M. Bishop. In evening I observed for time for adjustment of instruments.
