At 5-20 AM I arrived at [Kakmar], a most desolate place midst rocks, brûle + water. Civilization is marked by only one house station but which I found in a most [reneivilign] state, being under repairs, having had a coat of plaster put in to smother the innumerable bedbugs I was told.
I had [Hobmi] choice + bought my cot + blankets with an unoccupied (at least by human beings) room, + fur line sleeping + [murcell] lay down + slept. At 10 at night I left again for Rat Portage 23 miles to buy lumber for my observatory. There I put up at the Hilliand House – a fair hostelry.
