Description

English

Sebastian Gryphius (1492-1556) was a German printer (born Greif, in Reutlingen), although he would establish himself in Lyon, France for the bulk of his career. Chiefly printing the works of classical Latin authors, Gyphius published the works of many contemporary Humanists, including Erasmus (1466-1536). Gryphius also made use of the Italic type created by Aldus Manutius in his printing practice. In modern speak, he would be called an “early adopter” of Italic. Gryphius’ printer’s mark is a pun on his last name: it depicts, naturally, the mythological beast of the griffin.
