Description
Rossetti poem(s): "Echo"
Composition history: "Winner of the 2010 Florida Vocal Association Composition Competition with unending thanks to the Dreyfoos School of the Arts Singers, Arlene Graham Sparks, director." But this song was first intended to be ugly as a joke to a friend who asked the composer to write a song for him. In the front matter of the score, the composer explained that he employed the use of major seventh intervals in this pursuit. "However, once I added the major third and perfect fifth, and added a parallel progression, I realized that I had created something rather interesting. After discovering the beauty of these major seventh chords, I eagerly sought to create a song around it. Fortunately, I stumbled upon Christina Rossetti's hauntingly beautiful poem 'Echo', and after a few months I finished one of my first original compositions for choir." (Trevor Maloney, in score front matter)
