Message Nos. 448 and 449.
New has come to me from Montreal that dissenting people are boasting that it will not be long before a 'coup' takes place in Saint Pierre. Yesterday I put our governor on his guard and I spoke this morning with ...... He told me everything, not hiding the fact that the situation of the island on an important sea route caused some anxiety to the government. He paid me a visit a moment ago to say that the Prime Minister was greatly surprised to hear the news, after the assurances given this morning, that ex-Admiral MUSELIER had just taken possession of Saint Pierre.
He was anxious to state that this had been done (without his knowledge?) and that the 'coup' was not supported by England or the United States, nor by Canada.
