Timeline

- 1899, Jan. – Illinois company Sangamo Electric Co. is founded. (Sangamo A History of Fifty Years, 13)

- 1911 – The Sangamo Electric Company of Canada is established to sell Sangamo products in Canada. (Sangamo A History of Fifty Years, 64)

- 1916 – Manufacturing begins in Toronto. “By 1916, our business there had grown to a point, and Canadian duty restrictions on U.S. meters were such, that Mr. Collyer strongly urged that we begin manufacturing on a limited scale in Canada, so, as Scott Lynn seemed the logical man to take charge of this work, we sent him to Toronto in December, 1916, and the next month started operations in one floor of a loft building on Adelaide Street, West. Under Scott's able direction, our Canadian business rapidly increased, so, within a year, we were obliged to take another floor, and considerably extended the manufacturing work done there, although still supplying many parts from Springfield. By the end of 1918, it was evident that we were in Canada to stay, so, on the urgent recommendation of Mr. Collyer and Scott Lynn, Mr. Bunn went to Toronto and purchased the building at 183 George St. This, extended and enlarged several times in later years, we still occupy [1949].” (Sangamo A History of Fifty Years, 64)

- 1921 – Company active at 183 George Street, Toronto, ON (Might’s Greater Toronto City Directory, 1921)

- 1923 – Advertising the Lincoln-Sangamo Meter. “Factory: Toronto Head Sales Office: Montreal” (“Sangamo Polyphase”)

- 1924 – Collaborating with Lincoln Meters Ltd., selling Lincoln-Sangamo Meters. (Sangamo A History of Fifty Years, 91)

- 1928 – Company located at 183-185 George Street, Toronto. (Might’s Greater Toronto Directory 1928)

- 1930 – Acquired Lincoln Meters Ltd. (1924 – Collaborating with Sangamo Canadian plant, selling Lincoln-Sangamo Meters. (Sangamo A History of Fifty Years, 92)

- 1932, Jan – “1st of January 1932, Sangamo Co., Ltd. acquired exclusive rights to Wagner Electric Corporation's motor business in Canada, including the right to operate the business under the Wagner company name. Manufacture of Wagner electric motors began in a plant on Stafford Street in Toronto.” Alfred Collyer’s import/sales business absorbed into Sangamo Company Ltd, with Collyer “continuing as Director and Vice President of Canadian Sangamo, and operating the Montreal offices.” (Sangamo A History of Fifty Years, 95; “Sangamo Co., Ltd.”)

- 1935 – Listed under ‘metals’ and ‘meters’ at 179-185 George Street, Toronto. [Now underneath Moss Park] (Might’s Toronto City Directory 1935)

- 1939-1940 – Canadian plant “began production for military requirements. It continued to manufacture a limited quantity of meters, especially for export, but more important was the production of Wagner motors for military and machine tool purposes, pneumatic fittins and gauges for aircraft controls, and radiosondes…” (Sangamo A History of Fifty Years, 115-116)

1941 – March. “The first two sections of the new building at Leaside were completed in late June, 1941… It soon became necessary and desirable to further enlarge the plant and construction is well underway and by May directors expect to have all the company’s operations located in suitable premises at Leaside.” (“Company Reports - Sangamo Co. Ltd.”)

1942 – Moved to Leaside, Toronto at 215 Laird Drive. This building features a “landmark” rotating sign. (“Remembering the Sangamo Company”; Sangamo A History of Fifty Years, 118)
