Link to the full documentary: https://youtu.be/AtroR6pOHLY In this clip, drag queen Stephanie Stevens discusses her life since moving to Toronto, and needing to find her own family. She shares that her family is christian, meaning that her career and overall life as a gay man is not one that is questioned or generally talked about. Feeling alienated, she found her own joy within her friends in Toronto. Having that found family in the queer community is an experience all too common among Black queer people. Especially from the 70s to early 2000s, being ostracized from families, the Church and even their own queer community as a result of their race left most Black Canadians to come together to support one another. Later in the documentary, Stephanie shared that her mission was to know that she’s made a real difference in the world, especially within the LGBTQIA+ community. She sees great importance in giving something back and doing your part in the world, especially in chosen families in order to keep helping others through oppression and isolation.
