African American bassist and composer Nick Dunston has been named in the New York Times as an "indispensable player of th eNew York avant-garde."

His composition, "Mulch Awareness Month" was composed for contrabass. The piece, as Dunston explains at the start of Samuel Zagnit's July 2020 performance on YouTube, tries to "provide with the performer a set of tools for improvising, for cultivating a sonic environment, and for then explorig that sonic environment. while also providing the performer with a sense of direction and suggestions for performing."
