Stratford: Then and Now

All the world's a stage...

And no stage has had as great an impact on Canadian theatre as the one in Stratford, Ontario. Named after Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, this small town embraced its namesake and began a Shakespeare festival; now over 60 years later, the festival continues its run with enormous popularity. It truly is the epicentre of the Canadian Shakespeare experience. As with any other foray in the artistic world, Stratford's productions have had their ups and downs and despite its critics, people keep returning and immersing themselves in what is considered the Best of Canadian theatre. Because of this, we have decided to show what Shakespeare means to a Canadian audience through what productions made it to Stratford's famous stage, how the critics reacted and how the Canadian audience has changed since the tent first went up.
