The Display: Young Adult Novels
"Youth-Late" is the young adult bookshelf and display located in Books on Beechwood. This display can be found at the far back of the store in the Children and YA section, next to the "Youth-Middle" bookshelf. Each book was sorted alphabetically by the author’s last name.
Curating our books
We looked at the display from a consumer lens and picked the majority of our books at eye-level, from the middle shelves. The selection was done based on each book’s location on the shelf. Books on the left side of the display were more likely to be chosen than the right side as our eyes read from left to right. However, we also chose books with front-facing covers, since those get more attention than spine-facing books. Overall, each shelf of the display was accounted for, with the exception of the top shelf.
The goal of this project
Diversity and representation in young adult novels are important to allow young readers to see themselves in the books they read. Through cataloguing and analyzing the data collected from the display bookshelf of an indie bookstore in Ottawa, we can see on a smaller scale what type of Windows and Mirrors are being offered to young adults.
