2023-2024 Museum Experience Workshops
Over the course of this academic year, the uOttawa Museum offered four workshops which allowed participants to gain hands-on experience. Working with artefacts in our collection, these activities focused on practical skills that can be applied to museums, archives, or material culture in general!
Artefact Handling (October 10th and February 1st)
This workshop covered the processes and considerations involved in artefact handling in order to minimise risk and prevent damage. By providing participants the opportunity to handle real artefacts, they could practice the diligence and awareness needed to perfect this skill!
Collections Management (November 7th)
Do you know what really goes on behind-the-scenes at the museum? This workshop gave an introduction to the practice of collections management, and included a lesson on artefact cataloguing! By carefully documenting the features and condition of an ancient oil lamp, participants even contributed to our records.
Ancient Materials (February 8th)
This workshop focused on the physical material of artefacts, from organic materials like textiles and papyri, to inorganic materials like glass and metal. We looked at how environmental factors can affect these objects, and applied the knowledge by examining pieces in our collection!
