The caricature was first published in Bengough's magazine 'Grip'. He states in the publication, "A Caricature History of Canadian Politics: Events from the Union of 1841": In a speech at Watford, Mr. Mackenzie had stated that one of the "hon. gentlemen" who were then on a tour with Sir John Macdonald, had been the first to apply to the Reform Government for an appointment. The reference was well understood to be Hon. William Macdougall.
