Shakespeare in the City Elections

This caricature was published three weeks following A Political Midsummer Night’s Dream. The results of the Mayoralty contest ended up in the liberal party’s favour, the Grits, who were advocating representative government over British rule, the Tories. They are represented by Bottom and Puck from the play, respectively, and the scene where Bottom’s dream is being dispelled is shown. The Grit’s dream of holding majority is shown to have laid in the realm of futile fantasy, a prominent theme in Shakespeare’s famous play.
