TO IDENTIFY THE PRECISE GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF A SPECIFIC SITE, AS DETERMINED BY A SURVEYOR
WOODEN POSTS WERE USED EXTENSIVELY AS SURVEY MARKERS UNTIL C.1908. TYPICALLY THE TOP WAS POINTED TO SHED WATER, AND SORETARD DECAY
