Description

The surface has a central tondo, in which is displayed a female head in profile, with hair tied in a bun and held in place by a kekryphalos (hair net) highlighted with white and ochre paint. Below her chin is a small libation bowl, behind her head, a small mirror. The tondo composition is framed by a series of concentric decorative borders; from inner to outer: a border of wave pattern in red (reserve) is created by the juxtaposed black painted wave pattern; a band of reserve is followed by a border of leaves in white, and finally a pattern of bars on the rim. Decorated in the red figure style and technique: details are rendered prior to firing in black, with extensive use of white, and ochre paint for the decorative border, hairnet and details of libation bowl and mirror; the contour of the figure and parts of the libation bowl and mirror are in reserve.
