Description

The surface has a central tondo, in which is displayed a maenad in profile seated on what appears to be a rocky outcropping (heavily stylized), with hair swept up, and partly covered and held in place by a jeweled sakkos. She wears a diaphanous peplos (with an overfold), over a long-sleeved tunic, a necklace and several bracelets. In her left hand she holds what appears to be a mirror (stylized) and in her right hand two libation dishes. On each side of the composition along the frame of the tondo is a foliate decoration. Floating organic decorative elements fill the spaces on either side of the outcropping, and the space above the dishes. The tondo composition is framed by two concentric decorative borders; from inner to outer: a band of reserve, a band of ivy pattern. The rim is in reserve. Decorated in the red figure style and technique: prior to firing, details are rendered in black to indicate the folds of her garment; some use of white, and ochre paint for her jewelry, parts of her sakkos, details of the libation dishes and mirror, filling ornaments and the rocky outcropping; the contour of the figure and other parts of the decoration are in reserve.
