Description
Attic Type B skyphos with thin walls and ring foot; two handles one horizontal, one vertical both attached below rim. Light, thin black slip typical of this class. Resting surface of foot and base are reserved except for a ring painted around the interior of the base. Skyphoi with disparate handles are rarer than those with two horizontal handles. They were tailored for use in the Greek symposium, the banquet attended by Greek male citizens. The vertical handle was for drinking or dipping the cup into drink, while the horizontal handle allowed it to be hung up on a hook when not in use, between symposia.
