Beauties of a Royal Commission
John A Macdonald could not easily shake Bengough’s criticisms regarding the 1973 Pacific Scandal. During investigations looking into Macdonald’s case, the Prime Minister appointed his own friends to the Royal Commission, who would tend to the charges. Outraged at this lack of credibility, the public sentiment was well portrayed in this caricature. Macdonald is portrayed as both the accused and the judge, due to the influence his own people have with the commission. John A. Macdonald resigned months later. The caption refers to the Three Witches of Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth. There are interpretations which speculate that they controlled or influenced Fate itself, as Macdonald could have been attempting by appointing his friends to handle his political matters.
