What is a Solar Compass?

 

First and foremost, unlike the majority of compass-related instruments, the solar compass lacks magnetic materials. It's primary an astronomical tool used to find "true north" by guaging the sun instead of using the traditional compass. Gauging the sun was considered the safest way to make these measurements, as iron ore and other reactive metals can throw off a small pocket compass.
